Can I use any app in Kite?
You can use most apps that have a web or browser version, such as messaging, maps, and social media platforms. However, some apps may have limited functionality in their browser form. For example, WhatsApp Web has restrictions, and iMessage isn’t available in a browser.

Can I use Kite as a travel eSIM?
Right now, Kite works anywhere in the United States. If you travel outside of the US, you won’t be able to use Kite until you return. When you travel outside of the US, your phone will automatically switch to your regular data or Wi-Fi connection.

Kite stays free thanks to our advertising partners. Ads in Kite cover the cost of mobile data, so you can stay connected without paying anything yourself. There are no hidden fees or surprise charges, just free mobile data anywhere in the US, made possible through our partners.
Can I stream videos in Kite?

Setup
How do I move my Kite eSIM to my new phone?
If you get a new phone, you’ll need to download your Kite eSIM again. It’s quick and easy, just follow the steps to install Kite.
What does “carrier unlocked” mean?
A carrier-unlocked phone simply means your device isn’t restricted to one mobile carrier. Unlocked phones allow you to install eSIMs, like Kite’s, without any limitations.
If your phone was purchased through a carrier (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.), it may be locked. Your carrier can confirm its status or unlock it for you if you’re eligible.
Can I keep my phone number?
Yes! Kite doesn’t change or replace your phone number. You can keep your existing number and use your regular calling and texting plan as usual. Kite simply adds a free eSIM that gives you free mobile data inside the Kite app. It doesn’t interfere with your calls, texts, or contacts.
Can I use Kite if I’m on a prepaid or MVNO carrier (Mint, Visible, Boost, etc.)?
Yes, as long as your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM. Some prepaid carriers sell phones that are locked for 60–180 days.
If you’re not sure whether your prepaid device is unlocked, your carrier can verify it for you.
Does my phone need to be unlocked to use Kite?
Yes, your phone must be carrier unlocked to install and use the Kite eSIM. Most phones in the U.S. are unlocked once they’re fully paid off, but some carriers lock devices for a set period.
If you’re unsure, check with your carrier or look for an “Unlocked” status in your phone settings.
Do I need a phone plan to use Kite?
You can use Kite with or without a phone plan. You get a free Kite eSIM that works alongside your phone plan (if you have one) to keep you connected whenever you access the internet from within the Kite app. You can use your existing phone plan for text, calling, and contacts. The Kite eSIM is only active when you’re inside the Kite app. If you open apps or browsers outside of the Kite app, your phone will revert to your existing data plan or require wifi.
Kite is compatible with most newer smartphones that support eSIM as long as they are carrier-unlocked. Some devices, like the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR models, only allow you to use one eSIM or physical SIM at a time. Check if your device supports eSIM here.
If you run into any issues installing or using Kite on your device, please contact support.
What if my carrier says my phone can’t be unlocked?
Some carriers require a waiting period or full device payment before unlocking. You won’t be able to install Kite until your carrier unlocks your device.
How do I check if my phone is carrier unlocked?
This varies by device and carrier, but here are quick ways to check:
On iPhone:
- •Go to Settings > General > About
- •Look for “Carrier Lock”
- •If it says “No SIM restrictions,” your phone is unlocked.
- •If it lists a carrier, contact them to request unlocking.
On Android: Settings vary, but are often found under:
- •Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network
- •Look for a message indicating if other SIMs are allowed.
When in doubt, your carrier can tell you if your device is locked to a network.
What devices work with Kite?
Kite is compatible with most newer smartphones that support eSIM and iPads that have eSIM capabilities. It’s not available for laptops or smartwatches. Check if your device supports eSIM.
Do I need a credit card to use Kite?

If you ever see a request for payment, make sure you are using the official Kite app.
How do I know if I’m using Kite data or my phone plan data?
